In the competitive San Francisco commercial market, providing cutting edge amenities to stand apart from the competition was the challenge set forth to the design team.  The design team worked tirelessly to create an entry experience that is inspired by creativity, local culture, and natural moments/movements, all the while responding to patrons coming and going via advanced motion-sensing technology-based controls.

The lighting and controls design was established early on as a high-level priority to the success of the immersive experience and project. Creating a space that breaks the everyday experience for users was the goal, through evoking a sense of calm and focus prior to entering the building.  Spanning 75’ in length and 23’ in height, the custom programmed LED digital media experience activates the architectural environment, which is complimented by the surrounding architectural integrated lighting.  Through a careful and thorough controls design process, the use of motion-sensing technology allows the digital media wall and architectural lighting to work cohesively as one coordinated immersive experience.  Depending on the media content created and displayed, the architectural lighting’s intensity is raised/lowered as to keep the desired atmosphere within the space on design.  This key feature allowed the project to reduce the overall power density below IES guidelines by an additional 20%-30%, pending on the show/content and dimming values established.

Flexibility being a key factor to the controls requirements, as the need for future content addition is always critical to stay current, the system was set up with detailed instructions and a multi-layered zone approach to allow for the utmost flexibility.  This LEED Gold project provides a complete immersive experience via the lighting and controls design for which the intent was to never have tenants experience the same walk twice.
